Tua Tagovailoa Gets Major Card Market Correction

The addition of Tyreek Hill this offseason turned the Miami Dolphins offense into one of the NFL’s best, and QB Tua Tagovailoa instantly became one of the biggest beneficiaries on the field and in the sports card hobby.

Concussion issues and consecutive losses have caused a price correction, however, and suddenly Tagovailoa’s cards are back trailing several other star QBs from that stacked 2020 NFL Draft class.

(STILL) COOKED: Don’t be fooled — Baker Mayfield is still probably washed. The former hobby favorite started six games in Carolina this season and tossed just six TDs with six INT, and that should be much more important to his hobby future than a single outlier game against the Raiders.

Mayfield was cut by the Panthers and quickly signed by the Rams, and he’s now expected to start the final four games of the season for Los Angeles. The former No. 1 overall pick was solid in Thursday’s win over Las Vegas, but the reality is that he wasn’t great in Carolina and he wasn’t good in his last few seasons in Cleveland. Go all-in on Mayfield for collecting purposes if your heart takes you there, but tread lightly if moving forward for investment purposes.

TAGOVAILOA GETS CORRECTION: The hottest player in the hobby by far earlier this season, Tua Tagovailoa has gotten a price correction over the last month or so. Prices for the Dolphins QB soared at the beginning of the season when the addition of Tyreek Hill turned the offense into one of the NFL’s most lethal, but back-to-back losses with just 34 total points across both games has cooled Tagovailoa’s market some.

Tagovailoa’s PSA 10s tracked by Market Movers are down 9% collectively over the last 30 days, and as expected, his key rookies from Prizm, Optic and Donruss are all major decliners over that same period. Of his flagship rookies, the 2020 Select Concourse PSA 10 is the only with positive price growth over the last month, though one could point to lower sales volume as a major reason why.

ALLEN FATIGUE? The sports card hobby might just be a little bored with Josh Allen right now. The Bills are atop the AFC East, Allen’s Donruss Base is one of the most popular cards in the hobby, and yet his prices just keep declining. A poor stretch of play kicked off his recent decline, and despite the Bills playing well, things haven’t really recovered for Allen.

High prices and overall market correction are likely making a massive difference here, but there’s also a chance that the hobby is getting a little bored with Allen. An early MVP favorite, other young stars like Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa made major breakthroughs this season into stardom. Justin Fields also made a major leap before getting injured.

Allen’s PSA 10s tracked by Market Movers are down 6% collectively over the last 30 days, and his signature rookies are among the biggest decliners over that period. Allen’s key rookies from Prizm, Optic, Donruss and Select are all down between 8% and 27% over the last month.
